Kumihimo is a Japanese word for “gathered threads”. Kumihimo is a Japanese traditional technique of braiding strands of silk to create intricately colored cords. Samurai once used Kumihimo as laces for their armor. Kumihimo is still used as an accessory of Kimono to tie Obi (Obijime) and also as laces for tea ceremony utensils and so on.
Kumihimo is now very popular in Japan after an Oscar qualified movie ‘Your Name – Kimi no Na wa’ – Japanese animated youth science fiction fantasy film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai.
In the movie, the girl Mitsuha uses Kumihimo to bind her hair and it will become a key of the story. It is a very touching story and many people cried watching this movie including myself!
People who became a fan of this movie visit the place where featured in the movie and they buy and even make bracelets and smart phone straps from Kumihimo.
This is a Hand-made Silk Kumihimo bracelet that a traditional shop in Kyoto is selling at 20 euros. It seems they are getting so many orders that it takes around 3 weeks to dispatch!
