Kokeshi dolls are traditional Japanese wooden figures, hand-carved from wood and distinctively made without arms or legs.
They come in two styles: Traditional Kokeshi (伝統こけし) and Creative Kokeshi (創作こけし).
Traditional Kokeshi originated in the Tohoku region during the Edo period and are crafted using techniques passed down through generations. They embody the essence of Japanese folk art.
Creative Kokeshi, however, arose post-World War II, allowing artists freedom in design and technique. Since 1954, these works have gained recognition through the annual Prime Minister’s Award, establishing Creative Kokeshi as a cherished art form in Japan.
About the Ryouhu Kokeshi Doll
This Ryouhu (涼風, “Cool Breeze”) modern Creative Kokeshi was created by award-winning artist Izumi.
It features delicate, hand-painted details, including a blue kimono, morning glory flowers (Asagao), and a wind chime, evoking the freshness of a Japanese summer.
Each piece is meticulously crafted, with fine lines and traditional Japanese pigments, making each doll a limited-edition work of art.
