What is Kokeshi?
Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, handcrafted from wood and known for their simple yet charming design—featuring a rounded head, cylindrical body, and no arms or legs.
There are two main types of Kokeshi:
- Traditional Kokeshi (伝統こけし) – A folk art that originated in the Tohoku region during the Edo period. These dolls are made using time-honored techniques passed down from master artisans to their apprentices.
- Creative Kokeshi (創作こけし) – Introduced after World War II (around 1947), these dolls are crafted based on the artist’s individual creativity and original techniques. Since 1954, the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award has been given to outstanding Creative Kokeshi, further elevating their status as collectible art pieces.
About This Kokeshi
This Modern Creative Kokeshi (近代創作こけし) is called ‘Gochouju’ (ご長寿) and is crafted by award-winning artist Sekiguchi Toshio.
‘Gochouju’ is a term that celebrates longevity and a life well-lived. The doll set depicts an elderly couple with gentle smiles, white hair, and slightly rounded backs, symbolizing wisdom, happiness, and the beauty of aging gracefully. Dressed in beautifully detailed kimono, this piece radiates warmth and nostalgia.
