Today I would like to write about our silk scarves – Obiage. Obiage is used as an accessory with Kimono. Kimono is a Japanese traditional garment. The word “kimono”, which actually means a “thing to wear” (ki “wear” and mono “thing”), has come to denote these full-length robes. Today, the kimono is always used for important festival or formal moments, it is the representative of polite and a very formal clothing.
From the picture above, you can see the Kimono basics including Obiage (yellow fabric in the photo). Obiage are beautiful fabrics but their role is to bind an Obimakura underneath the Obi to style Obi at the back, so it’s only shown a little bit around Obi. Our supplier of our scarves is a traditional weaver in north of Kyoto which has been weaving Obi, Obiage, Haneri and other accessories of Kimono for more than 140 years. Our silk scarves are not made to market European people or tourists but for Japanese people who wear Kimono. Therefore, you will find authentic Japanese design, either traditional or modern, and the quality is exceptional! Our vintage silk scarves were owned by Japanese people but they are new unless otherwise stated. I hope you will enjoy wearing this gorgeous fabric as a scarf because I personally think it is a pity to be used just to bind Obi 🙂
