There are two main types of Kokeshi:

伝統こけし (Traditional Kokeshi): Originating in the Tohoku region during the late Edo period, these folk-art dolls are made using time-honored techniques passed down from master artisans.

創作こけし (Creative Kokeshi): Emerging after World War II, these modern Kokeshi are designed with artistic freedom, allowing for unique expressions and styles beyond traditional patterns.

Since 1954, Japan’s prestigious Prime Minister’s Award has recognized outstanding Creative Kokeshi, elevating them as collectible works of art.

This modern Creative Kokeshi doll, ‘Banshu’, was crafted by the award-winning artist Sekiguchi Toua.
