What is Kokeshi?
Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, handmade from wood and known for their simple, charming design without arms or legs.
There are two main types of Kokeshi:
1 Traditional Kokeshi (伝統こけし)
– A folk art originating in the Tohoku region during the Edo period (1603-1868).
– Crafted using traditional techniques passed down through generations.
– Recognized for their historical and cultural significance.
2. Creative Kokeshi (創作こけし)
– Designed with creative freedom by individual artists.
– Emerged after World War II in 1947, gaining popularity as a modern art form.
– Since 1954, the Prime Minister’s Award has honored outstanding works in Creative Kokeshi, elevating them as unique arts and crafts.
