What is Kokeshi
Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, hand-carved from wood and known for their simple design without arms or legs. There are two main types:
伝統こけし (Traditional Kokeshi): This folk art originated in the Tohoku region during the late Edo period, with techniques passed down from master to apprentice.
創作こけし (Creative Kokeshi): These dolls emerged after WWII and are crafted based on the artist’s original designs. Since 1954, the Prime Minister’s Award has honored the best creative Kokeshi, making them recognized as unique works of art.
About this Kokeshi
Crafted by the renowned artist 卯三郎 Usaburo, the “花の心 Hana no Kokoro” (meaning “Flower’s Heart”) Kokeshi doll stands 17cm tall and features a kimono adorned with the Ominaeshi flower design.
This large, beautifully crafted doll reflects the warmth of nature:
– The yellow Ominaeshi flower is softly illuminated by moonlight, with its delicate beauty representing one of Japan’s cherished autumn flowers.
– The layered hills symbolize the mountains of Gunma, while the moonlight adds a serene glow to the scene, evoking the gentle, heartwarming spirit of the flower.
What is Ominaeshi 女郎花?
Ominaeshi, a vibrant yellow flower, has been admired since the Manyoshu era. The name, a combination of “Omina” (woman) and “Eshi” (pressure), suggests that the flower’s beauty is so remarkable it outshines women.
