Japanese Wooden Soup Bowl | Momiji

This is a Japanese wooden soup bowl with a design of Momiji (autumn leaves).

The technique is called 蒔絵 Makie.

Makie is one of the representative decorative techniques of lacquer crafts.

Pictures and patterns are drawn with lacquer, and before the lacquer hardens, maki-e powder (metallic powder such as gold or silver) is sprinkled on the surface to decorate it.

It is called ‘Makie’ because it involves sprinkling powder to create pictures.
