Kokeshi dolls are a traditional form of Japanese craftsmanship, handcrafted from wood without arms or legs. They come in two distinct styles:
- Traditional Kokeshi (伝統こけし): These folk art dolls originated in Japan’s Tohoku region during the Edo period. Passed down through generations, they are made using time-honored techniques.
- Creative Kokeshi (創作こけし): Introduced post-WWII, these dolls reflect the artist’s unique vision and are created using innovative methods. Since 1954, the Prime Minister’s Award has been given to the best Creative Kokeshi, recognizing them as valuable pieces of Japanese art.
About This Kokeshi:
This modern Creative Kokeshi doll, called ‘城下町 (Jokamachi)’, was created by award-winning artist 藤川正衛 Fujikawa Shoei.
The name “Jokamachi” means “castle town,” and this Kokeshi features a beautiful depiction of a castle and delicate cherry blossoms on a soft pink kimono, symbolizing the elegance and history of Japanese heritage.
Its intricate design and vibrant color make it a perfect blend of tradition and modern artistry.
