What is Kokeshi?

Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, lovingly handcrafted without arms or legs, showcasing simplicity and charm.

There are two main types:

Traditional Kokeshi (伝統こけし): Originating in the Tohoku region during the Edo period, these dolls are made using techniques passed down through generations.

Creative Kokeshi (創作こけし): Developed post-World War II, these dolls reflect individual artistic expression, each uniquely designed by the artist. Since 1954, the best Creative Kokeshi have been recognized with the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award, elevating this style to an esteemed art form.

About This Kokeshi Doll
