This white porcelain vintage pair of teacups, made from white porcelain, features a striking design of Komainu -one in blue and one in red.
Komainu, often known as lion-dogs, are guardian creatures traditionally placed at Shinto shrine entrances to protect and ward off evil.
On the back of each cup, the inscription 縁起戌年 (Engi Inudoshi) references the Year of the Dog, symbolizing protection and the safeguarding of new beginnings.
Crafted by Tachikichi, a renowned Japanese pottery and porcelain brand with over 260 years of history, these teacups are a piece of Kyoto’s rich tradition.
Though there is a small 1mm crack on the back (as shown in photos), the cups remain in otherwise perfect, unused condition.
