Tokoname ware (常滑焼, Tokoname-yaki) is a type of Japanese pottery, stoneware, and ceramics produced in and around Aichi, Japan. Tokoname was the location of one of the six Antient Kilns of Japan and it dates back to the 12th century.
Tokoname-yaki teapot technology was introduced from Yixing, China, at the end of the Edo period. After that, the sensibility and efforts of the craftsmen created world-class “skills”.
At first, the mainstream was the “胴あけ dō-ake” tea strainer type “でべそ debeso,” in which a hole was made directly in the body.
With the progress of mechanization, easy-to-use ceramic tea strainers such as “sasame” and “ceramesh” became popular.
The number of craftsmen who make teapots with these tea strainers has decreased.
“Tosai” is a tea strainer that is an improved version of the original tea strainer and arranged in a modern style.
The tea strainer, which is larger than before, makes the tea flow better and prevents leaf clogging.
As the word “温故知新 Onkochishin” suggests, this teapot is filled with the spirit of a craftsman.
