This vintage pair of Akabeko and Kurobeko cow ornaments from Japan’s Showa era is a beautifully preserved cultural artifact. Each wooden cow is carefully lacquered and sits on a matching wooden board. One cow is painted in the traditional red (shuiro), while the other is in a sleek black finish.
“Akabeko” is a traditional toy originating from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. The red cow, “Beko” in the local dialect, is believed to ward off evil spirits and protect against epidemics. Its red body is symbolic of protection, while the spots are said to guard against disease, making these cows talismans for health and well-being.
Each cow’s head is attached with thread, allowing the heads to move when gently pushed, a charming feature of this traditional craft.
