Vintage Handmade Beer Cup Gekka Dokushaku 月下独酌

The beer cup features a poem of a famous Chinese Poet Li Bai.

It is an ancient poem about drinking alcohol with the moon, shadow and himself and it is written around the cup with the moon.

We have two of the same cup.

About Craftsman

This beer cup comes with a paulownia box with the title.  It says ‘月下独酌 Gekka Dokushaku’ ‘麦酒器 Mugi-shuki – beer cup’.

With the name of craftsman ‘正一 Shoichi’.

This is a certification to show the origin of the cup and the successive owners (if there are) which are written in ink on the box and it is called 箱書き Hakogaki.

A paper slip of his artist activities between 1954 – 2005 is also enclosed.

The poem in Chinese and Japanese is also enclosed.

At the back of the bowl, there is a stamp.

1954 He was born in Kyoto

He received many awards, held many exhibitions including Paris and Italy.

His collections are exhibited at Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza (Italy), Seoul museum and Kimono museum in Tokyo.
