There is a classical Japanese dance-drama that has been performed since the 14th century which is called ‘Noh’. The actors wear masks called Nohmen. Frequently used masks represent demons and spirits, as well as women and men of various ages. Noh masks are also called omote (front), and it is said that by putting on a face to show the face, the performer hides in the darkness behind the mask.
Okame お亀
Okame’s role is to “exorcise” or “amulet against evil”, and is a “god who invites good fortune”.
Hyottoko ひょっとこ
Hyottoko represents a comical male character.
Okame is the god who invites good fortune, and Hyottoko is the god who protects fire. Together, they are sometimes treated as gods of happy home.
Kitsune 狐
Kitsune (fox) is an auspicious divine messenger who brings happiness to people
Zouonna 増女
A female mask with a noble and sacred image. A toned face that contains sorrow. Used for celestial maidens and goddesses.
Okina 翁
The play Okina is performed on auspicious occasions such as the New Year.
For the people of the time, Okina was not just a performing art to appreciate, but a prayer for a safe life.
Tengu 天狗
Tengu are a type of legendary creature found in Japanese folk religion and are also considered a type of Shinto god (kami) or yōkai (supernatural beings).
It has a long nose and Japanese say that when you are boasting about yourself, you become ‘Tengu’ or your nose become long when you are too proud of yourself.
Hannya 般若
Hannya is a mask of a female demon. It derives from Sanskrit “prajñā ” and it means profound wisdom.
