Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, handcrafted without arms or legs and known for their charming, minimalist design.
There are two main types:
Traditional Kokeshi (伝統こけし) – A folk craft from the Tohoku region, dating back to the late Edo period. These are made using techniques passed down from master to apprentice.
Creative Kokeshi (創作こけし) – Introduced after World War II, these dolls reflect each artist’s imagination and unique techniques. Since 1954, outstanding works have been honored with the Prime Minister’s Award, highlighting their cultural and artistic value.
About This Kokeshi Doll
This modern Creative Kokeshi, titled ‘さくら Sakura’, was lovingly crafted by award-winning artist Fujikawa Shoei.
Her name says it all—Sakura (cherry blossom). She wears a soft white-to-pink gradient kimono adorned with beautifully hand-painted sakura flowers and delicate green leaves.
Her gentle smile give her a sweet, calming presence.
Each doll is one-of-a-kind, handcrafted with care in Japan.
